Special Educational Needs (SEND)

The Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Department caters for the needs of students with academic, physical, social and emotional difficulties. We aim to provide inclusive provision to all students identified with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to ensure that they participate fully in the life of the Academy and achieve all that they are capable of.

Our SENCO at the academy can be contacted via d.howe@lan.merciantrust.org.uk.

Our SEND Team

Our SEND policies are available on our Policies page.

  • Emotional regulation
  • Physical or sensory needs

The aim is to help every student succeed and feel included.

What is SEN Support?

SEN Support is help given in school for students who need extra support but do not have an EHCP.
This may include:

  • Small‑group work
  • In‑class support
  • Adapted resources
  • Check‑ins with staff
  • Extra time or scaffolding

What is an EHCP?

An Education, Health and Care Plan is a legal document for students with significant and long‑term needs.
It explains:

  • What the student finds difficult
  • What support they need
  • What outcomes they are working towards
  • Not all students with SEND need an EHCP

How does the school identify SEND needs?

Teachers and support staff look at:

  • Classwork
  • Assessments
  • Behaviour
  • Communication
  • How the student manages day‑to‑day tasks
  • Parents and carers can also share concerns.

If needed, the SEND team may involve outside professionals.

What types of needs do we support?
