Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Q3 Academy Langley, we believe that positive mental health and wellbeing are fundamental to helping every student achieve their full potential. We understand that children and young people can face a range of challenges both in and out of school, and we are committed to working closely with families to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and valued.

Mental wellbeing influences how young people think, feel, learn, and build relationships. By working together, we can help students develop the confidence, resilience, and coping skills needed to navigate life's challenges.

Every student at Q3 Academy Langley deserves to feel safe, supported, and able to flourish. By working together, families and school staff can help create an environment where our young people feel confident, resilient, and ready to succeed.

At Q3 Academy Langley, the wellbeing of our students remains at the heart of everything we do.

How We Support Wellbeing at Q3 Academy Langley

We are committed to creating a positive and inclusive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our approach includes:

  • Promoting positive mental health throughout the school community through Family Breakfast & Lunch, tutor time, PSHE, Ethos Week and relational approaches.
  • Encouraging students to talk openly about their wellbeing.
  • Providing pastoral support and guidance, as well as open access to Youth Mental Health First Aiders within each pastoral team.
  • Helping students develop resilience and emotional literacy.
  • Extensive work with agencies when additional support is needed through The Umbrella and referring to external agencies outside of school if required.
  • Maintaining strong partnerships and working relationships with families.

The Umbrella

The Umbrella is Q3 Academy Langley’s dedicated support offering at Q3 Academy Langley, designed to help students managing Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and behavioural distress by working closely with our pastoral and behaviour teams, also our SEN department. Following Department for Education guidance, we believe that acting early is the best way to support your child's wellbeing. We closely monitor academy reports to adapt our care for challenges like anxiety, anger, trauma, and those students struggling to attend school, by providing safe spaces for them to share their thoughts and feelings and gain advice and guidance to navigate their experiences.

As waiting lists for external NHS mental health services (CAMHS) can sadly last over well over a year, The Umbrella steps in to bridge that gap. We partner with around 15 specialist providers to offer tailored care, ranging from holistic options like animal therapy, sports mentoring, and creative art workshops, to professional clinical help including speech therapy, occupational therapy, NHS Reflexions, and our school counsellor. Our main goal is to give your child the right support at the right time, keeping them safe, happy, and thriving in school.

Signs Your Child May Need Extra Support

It is normal for young people to experience ups and downs. However, you may wish to seek support if you notice persistent changes such as:

  • Feeling withdrawn from family or friends
  • Changes in mood or behaviour
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed
  • Increased anxiety or worry
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Difficulties concentrating or engaging with school

If you have concerns about your child's wellbeing, please contact either your child’s pastoral team, or Miss Beddow (Senior Mental Health Lead) within the academy, so that we can work together to identify the most appropriate support.

Parental Support

We offer a variety of parental support to help support your child with their wellbeing and mental health. These include universal and targeted parental workshops throughout the year on prevalent topics, such as supporting positive wellbeing, exam stress, anxiety, self-harm and eating concerns. We also offer a targeted approach through Family Help for more specific work with parents.
