Aim
At Q3 Langley, our Personal Development curriculum is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skill that promotes academic success and develops strong character. Through a culture of high aspiration, we ensure students enjoy the challenges education can provide whilst embodying the Academy ethos to ‘seek that which is good, that which is right and that which is true’. Ultimately, we want our students to contribute to life beyond the Academy as successful, confident, responsible and respectful citizens.
Intent
Our Personal Development curriculum includes formal teaching through subject areas, tutor time, assemblies and extra-curricular activities. It is planned to enable all students to develop knowledge, understanding and skill in the following areas: PSHE/RSE; Careers; Citizenship; British Values; Enrichment; Extra-Curricular; Student Leadership; Family Lunch.
Sequence and Structure
Our curriculum is split into Key Stage 3 (years 7, 8 and 9) and Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11). All students have two lessons of Personal Development each week, delivered through tutor time. The resources for this are planned by a team of specialist and dedicated staff who are responding to the needs of our students and the challenges of our local context. Throughout each academic year we have many special events, such as an off-timetable (themed) Ethos Week; special celebration days; sports tournaments; performing arts events, rewards assemblies; and lots of other activities designed to enrich our student’s education beyond the statutory curriculum.
PSHE
The majority of PSHE education became compulsory for all schools in September 2020. This covers Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) at key stages 3 and 4 and Health Education (HE) from key stage 3 to 4. At Q3 Langley, we cover everything outlined in statutory ‘RSHE’ guidance to make sure all of our students benefit. This is essential given growing concerns about mental health and sexual harassment in schools across the country. Citizenship
Citizenship is a statutory requirement at KS3 and KS4. Citizenship topics will be introduced and discussed during the tutor time programme. At KS3, they will cover topics such as British Values and the nature of Democracy. At KS4, not only will student understanding of KS3 topics be consolidated, but students will go onto approach topics such as the legal system and taxes.
However, at Q3 Langley, we take pride in the fact that we do not cover the bare minimum outlined by the National Curriculum’s Programme of Study, but enter all Year 9 students to undertake GCSE Citizenship. This allows more time to be spent considering important and relevant Citizenship topics at a deeper level, thus developing their awareness of how Britain is effectively governed and fostering a closer personal identity with their local community. GCSE Citizenship covers topics such as; Britain and the Wider World; Rights and Responsibilities held by UK Citizens; Voting systems and the nature of the British Legal System.
